Today's Lesson: What is MACD, how to read it?
Hello investors! Welcome to the BIST 30 Daily Reports family. Today in Stock Market School, we'll cover one of the most popular and effective trend-momentum indicators, theMACD we will get to know. Understanding this indicator is one of the most important steps you should take to catch market trends.
1. What is it?
The literal meaning is "Moving Average Convergence Divergence", but let's focus on what it means in the stock market.
Let's start with a simple analogy: imagine a track where two brothers are racing. One brother (MACD Line) always runs faster, while the other (Signal Line) runs a bit slower and more steadily. As investors, we watch for the moments when these two brothers get closer to each other or overtake each other.
Clear Definition:
MACD generally consists of the difference between 12-day and 26-day moving averages. This difference is reflected in the indicator after being smoothed out from daily price fluctuations. Its main purpose is to determine the direction of the market (is it going up or down?) and its momentum (how strong is the movement?).
2. Why is it important?
What does this information give the investor?
-
Catches Trends: No matter how volatile prices are, MACD clearly tells you the overall direction of the market.
-
Filters False Signals: Price movements can sometimes be misleading. MACD protects you from "fake" rallies or declines by showing the real strength behind the price.
-
Finds Entry and Exit Points: Especially the intersections of signal lines are one of the most reliable indicators of when to buy or sell.
3. How to Read / Use?
In the MACD chart, you usually see three main components:MACD Line, Signal Line andHistogram.
-
MACD Line: It is usually blue in color. It shows the underlying direction of the price. If this line is moving upward, the trend is upward.
-
Signal Line: It is usually red or orange in color and is placed above the MACD line. This represents a "slowdown" or "convergence" point.
-
Histogram: These are the vertical bars between the signal line and the MACD line.
-
Bars being on the positive (right) side means that buying power is greater than selling power.
-
Bars being on the negative (left) side means that selling power is greater than buying power.
-
Crossover Logic:
-
Buy Signal: When the MACD line crosses above the Signal line (breaks it), you should start buying.
-
Sell Signal: When the MACD line crosses below the Signal line (breaks it), you should start selling.
4. Real Example
When we look at today's market data, let's examine how we can see MACD signals in strong momentum stocks.
For exampleBIMAS stock has a strong increase of 1.10% today. For this stock, we see high values like channel 88% and r=0.83. This high channel value indicates that trend indicators like MACD are strongly upward and that momentum is solid. Here, the investor can see that the MACD lines are crossing upward, suggesting the trend will continue.
On the other handDSTKF stock shows a very rapid movement with a daily increase of 4.77%. However, we see a negative correlation value like channel 87% and r=-0.65. This may indicate that an indicator like MACD has not yet supported a strong upward trend for this stock or that the signal lines have not yet crossed. The investor may notice that despite the rapid price movement, MACD is not giving a signal and can act cautiously.
5. Common Mistakes
-
Just Looking at Price: The price may seem to be rising very fast, but if MACD hasn't crossed yet, this could be a "false alarm". Don't forget to check MACD before assuming the trend has ended.
-
Being Fooled by Noise: During noisy market times, MACD signals can appear very frequently. Most of these signals are not valid; focus only on the strongest crossovers.
-
Being Late: MACD is a trend-following indicator, so it can give a signal when the price reaches a peak. Therefore, if you want to enter based on MACD, try to follow the initial stages when the price has just started to rise.
6. Mini Test
Do you think you understand this topic? Answer the following questions to check your answers.
- What does it mean when the MACD line crosses the Signal line from below to above in the MACD indicator?
- TTKOM while there is a very rapid movement with a daily increase of 9.94% in the stock, we see a channel value of 147% and a negative value like r=-0.74. What does this situation suggest from a MACD perspective?
- What is the basic function of MACD?
Answers:
1. Buy signal.
2. It suggests that MACD has not yet supported this rapid rise or has given a warning before changing the trend direction.
3. It is to detect the real power (momentum) behind the price and the overall trend direction.
7. Summary
-
MACD shows the trend by smoothing out price movements.
-
Signal line crossovers determine the most basic entry/exit points.
-
Instead of looking at the price speed, focus on the strength and direction of the MACD.
-
MACD signaling is expected in actively traded stocks (e.g. TTKOM, VAKBN), but negative correlation (r) values are important for filtering signals.
